Local tradition holds that the fruit was so prized it was reserved for the feudal lord of the Kishu domain, and a single tree was once guarded by samurai. Today it is still grown in small numbers in Wakayama and is considered a regional specialty, and it is seldom found outside Japan.

Despite its “lemon” name, the Sanbokan is not a true lemon, and its flavor is what sets it apart. This is a sweet lemon. Its acidity is far lower than a Eureka or Lisbon, and the juicy flesh has a gentle, honeyed sweetness balanced by just enough tartness to stay refreshing. In Japan it is peeled and eaten fresh in segments like an orange, something few people would try with an ordinary lemon. Many growers say the juice is sweet enough to make lemonade with no added sugar. The large, pale yellow fruit has a distinctive neck at the stem end and a thick, fragrant rind that is excellent for zest, candied peel, and marmalade.

At North Florida Citrus Nursery, our Sanbokan trees offer citrus enthusiasts a true rarity: a centuries-old Japanese heirloom with the bright aroma of a lemon and the easy sweetness of a fresh-eating fruit, carried by very few nurseries in the United States.

Detail

Description

Tree Size (as shipped)

24–36 inches

Mature Tree Size (10 yrs)

10–15 feet tall, 8–12 feet wide

Harvest Season

Late winter – spring

Seeds Per Fruit

Many

Grafting

Grafted – Standard Rootstock

Care Needs

Full sun, well-drained soil, regular watering

Cold Tolerance

22–26°F (moderately hardy)

Growing quirk: Sweetness builds the longer the fruit stays on the tree.
