King Mandarin
The King Mandarin is a historic variety from Indochina, the region now covering Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos, where it has been grown for centuries. It was introduced to the United States in the 1880s and was studied extensively by early citrus breeders. It became an important parent of later varieties, most notably the Kinnow mandarin, a King × Willowleaf cross that is now the leading mandarin in India and Pakistan.
The King is one of the largest mandarins. Its fruit is bold and somewhat flattened, with a thick, rough, deep orange rind that still peels easily. The flesh is rich, aromatic, and juicy, with a complex sweet-tart flavor that many growers describe as having more depth than modern commercial mandarins. It is one of the latest-ripening mandarins, extending the fresh citrus season well into spring after most other varieties have finished.
At North Florida Citrus Nursery, our King Mandarin trees appeal to collectors and home growers who want a piece of citrus history along with a late-season harvest.
