Orlando Tangelo
The Orlando Tangelo is one of Florida’s original tangelos. It was created by USDA plant breeder Walter Swingle in 1911 by crossing the Duncan grapefruit with the Dancy tangerine, and it was released in 1931. Originally named “Lake,” it was renamed Orlando after the city where it was developed and became a mainstay of Florida’s early-season fresh fruit industry.
The fruit is medium to large, slightly flattened, and bright orange, with a thin rind that peels reasonably well. The flesh is exceptionally juicy and mildly sweet, with a hint of the grapefruit tang from its Duncan parent. Orlando is a favorite for fresh juice, and its heavy crops make it a practical, productive tree for families. The tree is easy to recognize by its cupped, slightly folded leaves.
At North Florida Citrus Nursery, our Orlando Tangelo trees are a strong pick for northern Florida growers. Orlando is one of the most cold-tolerant tangelos available and a heavy, reliable producer once established.
